In maths, we are using the White Rose Maths to guide our learning. We have special workbooks that we are enjoying completing . The blocks we will be completing during the Autumn Term will be; Addition and Subtraction within 20, Place Value: Numbers to 50, Measurement - length and height, and Mass and Volume.
Within these blocks, we will be using concrete resources to aid our learning.
Addition and subtraction to 20
We learnt how to count on to add numbers together and also to use number bonds to help us with our addition and subtraction. We learnt how to add crossing the ten and subtract crossing the ten which was very tricky but we tried very hard! Once we became more confident with addition and subtraction, we then started to compare number sentences and solved word problems.
Numbers to 50
During this unit we practiced writing our numbers to 50 and used our knowledge on tens and ones to work out how many tens and ones are in each number. We showed how to represent each number using tens and ones and other objects. We learnt how to compare and order numbers to 50 and we also began to count in twos and fives. Once we had learnt all about numbers to 50, we solved word problems.
Length and height
We learnt what length and height meant and started by comparing which objects were shorter or longer. We used non-standard units to measure at first and then moved to standard units and using rulers.
Weight and volume
We learnt what weight and volume meant and started by comparing which containers held more and which held less. We also began measuring how much liquid was in each container and solved problems involving capacity.
Our English lessons are all based around different stories. At the end of each story the children will be completing some writing. This writing includes; writing a retell of stories, writing a shape poem and writing an informal letter.
These are the books we have used in English:
Little Red Riding Hood
The outcome for this story was to be able to retell the story using question marks. This story was taught over a three week block. We spent the first week predicting what was going to happen and joining in with the predictable phrases in the story. Then we spent the next week focusing on using capital letters and knowing how to use a question mark. Finally we planned our writing and wrote sentences to retell the story.
The Gingerbread Man
The outcome for this story was to be able to retell the story using 'and'. This story was taught over a three week block. We spent the first week predicting what was going to happen and discussing the events of the story. Then we spent the next week focusing on the suffix ending -ing and when and how to use 'and' in our writing. Finally we planned our writing and wrote sentences to retell the story.
The Queen's Hat
The outcome for this story was to write a shape poem using capital letters. This story was taught over a two week block. We spent the first week predicting what was going to happen and enjoying listening to different shape poems. Then spent the second week planning our own shape poem in the shape of the Queen's hat.
Lost and Found
The outcome for this story was to write a letter using full stops. This story was taught over a three week block. We spent the first week predicting what was going to happen and inferring how characters were feeling at different points of the story. Then we spent the next week looking at the suffix ending -ed and understanding what contraction apostrophes are and what they are used for. Finally we planned our letters and wrote to our mums and dads, telling them what had happened to the penguin in the story.
Our main non-core learning this term will be based around the topic of Monarchs. Especially, Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II.
In History, we are learning facts about these monarchs. We have started by looking at different monarchs, and ordering them on a timeline. After this we will look at the Queens above in more detail. We are using our skills of creating a timeline to order the key dates / events in these Queens' lives.
For DT, we looked at creating a mask 'fit 'for or King or Queen to wear to a ball. We began by looking at existing products, saying what we liked and disliked about them. Then we designed our own masks and created them.
In Art, we have been learning the skill of sketching. We used special sketching pencils, and learnt how to hold the pencil correctly to get the right pencil strokes. The children have practised the sketching skill through sketching a portrait of Queen Victoria, as well as self portraits.
In Science, we have been learning about materials. We began by looking at different types of materials. Then we thought about objects and what material they are made from. This was tricky sometimes, as some objects are made from more than one material! We then looked at what we know about the materials. Are they hard/soft/bendy, strong, smooth/rough. We thought about why certain materials are best suited to be used for different purposes.
In the second half of the term, we completed experiments. We learnt how to set out an investigation in our books. We also conducted experiments to find out which materials were best for different purposes. We are getting really good at making predictions!
