Commonwealth Games medalist visits St Giles Academy!
Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming a professional athlete to our school.
Emily Jade-Campbell is currently a member of the England and Great Britain weightlifting team who achieved a bronze medal at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia.
She is also the current British record holder in her class and has represented her country at different age levels.
Emily came to visit us through an organisation known as ‘Inspired Through Sport’, who help to arrange events for athletes to visit schools across the country, to help inspire children to work hard, stay motivated
and to chase their dreams (no matter what they maybe). In return, schools look to raise funds through sponsored events to help support our athletes and to increase school funding for sport equipment. This benefits everyone as the school
gets to increase focus on sport and physical activity, while the athletes gain some much needed financial support for their demanding training programmes.
The day itself consisted of a whole school assembly, where Emily spoke about herself, her achievements and her goals. Following on from that, years 1 through to 6 were given a fantastic opportunity to take part in PE lessons, lead by our special guest.
The children also had the chance to ask Emily questions about her sport and her life, whilst also being able to hold one of the many medals that Emily had achieved so far.
Overall, the day was a tremendous success with Emily herself being completely overwhelmed by the hospitality of the whole school and the amazing enthusiasm of our children. For us, it was a pleasure to welcome Emily to our school and wish her all the best for the future.
Over the next few weeks, pupils at St Giles will be looking to organise sponsored sporting events in school, to help raise money for the school and athletes like Emily. I for one cannot wait to see what activities are created and how much we can raise!
